Riverdale, N.Y. (October 13, 2007) ? The Manhattan College men's soccer team battled St. Peter's in an evenly-played game only to suffer one defensive letdown that led to a goal and a 1-0 defeat
Both teams had a few chances in the first half, with Jasper senior midfielder Dan Cipriano hitting the keeper on a header and Manhattan junior striker Fernando Londono missing a chip chance.
In the second half, Manhattan freshman Thomas Bandov saw his shot just cleared off the line by a St. Peter's defender and then the Jaspers saw a tremendous strike by Cirpriano go into the back of the net, only to be called an offsides goal.
Then, in the 74th minute, minutes after Jasper freshmen defender Josh Renner was taken off the field due to a head injury, Murphy Wiredu dribbled past a few Jaspers' defenders and scored what proved to be the winning goal.
“Again, we are playing well enough to win; I just know the breaks will turn the other way as we move into our next conference games,” said Manhattan Coach Michael Swanwick.
St. Peter's keepers Hernando Santamaria, played the first half, and Carl Braverman, who played the second half, had a total of six saves for the Peacocks, while Jasper keeper John Ciano had two saves.
The Jaspers next take on Loyola of Maryland this Friday, October 19, at 7 p.m. at Gaelic Park.
