Tommy Lenhardt converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute to give Manhattan its first win of the season, downing visiting Quinnipiac University, 2-1, this afternoon at Jack Coffey Field on the Fordham University campus. The Jaspers improve to 1-4-0 on the season, while the Bobcats fall to 0-3-0 on the season.
Quinnipiac had the first scoring opportunity of the game, when Graciano Brito's shot was saved by Manhattan sophomore keeper
John Ciano 16:50 into the game.
Manhattan would respond with the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute, as sophomore
Dan Shemanski tallied his first collegiate goal, intercepting a Bobcat pass deep in Quinnipiac territory and beating Bobcat keeper Paul Fleck to the far post.
Despite holding a 7-3 advantage in shots, Quinnipiac could not solve Ciano in the first half, as Manhattan carried the 1-0 edge into the break.
The Bobcats would knot the score at 1-1 at the 58:36 mark, as Francis Mavula fed the ball to Tyler Sheikh in the box, and Sheikh beat Ciano to the far post for his first goal of the season.
Each team continued to apply the offensive pressure, and Manhattan finally broke through at the 70:20 mark as
Dan Carr was fouled in the area, awarding the Jaspers with a penalty kick. Lenhardt calmly tucked the ball into the near corner to provide the game-winner.
Ciano tallied a game-high six saves for his first win as a Jasper, while Fleck stopped three shots.
Manhattan will return to action this weekend, traveling to Philadelphia, Pa. to participate in the Philadelphia Soccer Classic, taking on Philadelphia University at Saint Joseph's University on Friday at 5:00 p.m. before taking on Saint Joseph's at Philadelphia on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
