Philadelphia, Pa. (September 17, 2006)-LaSalle's Dana Giordano scored the winning goal three minutes into double overtime, giving the Explorers a 2-1 win Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium. The win snapped Manhattan's school record six game winning streak.
LaSalle's Heather Barclay got the winning play started, gaining possession of the ball at the top of the goalie box. Barclay played the ball to Giordano on the left side of the box, whose shot to the far post beat Lady Jaspers keeper
Alicia DeFino.
As they did in Friday's 2-1 win over Temple, Manhattan fell behind early, conceding a goal in the 18th minute. LaSalle's Sara Copare fed a pass to Barclay near the post, who knocked the ball in for her first goal of the season.
Manhattan's offense uncharacteristically struggled in the first half, as they were out shot by the Explorers 5-0. However, in the second half, the Lady Jaspers offense came to life and tied the score on
Jill Beauchamp's second goal of the season in the 58th minute. Beauchamp took a pass from
Brittany Duhamel, then fired away from 20 yards, beating Explorers goalie Lauren Malizia, giving Beuachamp her second goal in as many games.
Neither team was able to score the rest of the way sending the game into overtime. In the 98th minute, Manhattan were nearly sent home winners when a shot by Beauchamp clanged off the post. That would be Manhattan's best chance and last chance to score as Giordano scored to prevent a tie.
Manhattan finished its difficult weekend road trip to Philadelphia 1-1, and the Lady Jaspers will look to start a new winning steak when they take on Wagner at Gaelic Park on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Following that game, Manhattan will play at cross town rivals Fordham in their final contest before beginning MAAC Conference play.
