New Britain, Conn. (August 25, 2006)--The Lady Jaspers couldn't have asked for a better start to their 2006 campaign, earning a dramatic two-overtime road victory at perennial Northeast Conference power Central Connecticut State University. Playing in a scoreless deadlock, senior co-captain
Katie Kuntz finally broke through by heading freshman
Courtney McMahon's corner kick into the lower left hand corner of the net for the 1-0 win. Kuntz's first goal of her senior season gave the defending NEC Champion Blue Devils their first overtime loss since 2003.
CCSU, who has won the last four NEC titles, out shot Manhattan in the first half by an 8-2 margin, but sophomore goalkeeper
Alicia DeFino was equal to the task. DeFino turned aside each of the three shots that made their way on goal during the opening half.
In the second half, Manhattan reversed the shooting trend, firing off six shots to CCSU's two as the Lady Jasper defense only allowed the Blue Devils one shot on goal, which was stopped by freshman keeper
Caitlin Trupiano, who came on for DeFino in the second half.
After a scoreless first overtime, in which Trupiano made three big saves, the Lady Jaspers wasted no time in putting home the winner. Just 36 seconds into the second extra period, Kuntz beat Blue Devils' goalie Erin Herd to end the match.
Trupiano earned her first career collegiate victory, while Herd took the loss.
The Lady Jaspers are in action again on Sunday when the travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on the College of the Holy Cross.
