FITZPATRICK'S CAREER DAY PACES BASEBALL'S SWEEP OF SAINT PETER'S

GAME 2 BOXSCORE

Riverdale, N.Y. (May 13, 2006)- John Fitzpatrick went 5-6 with 10 RBI, four runs, two homers, two homers, and two walks and Eric Nieto stole four bases as Manhattan scored 30 runs in a MAAC doubleheader sweep of Saint Peter's this afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park on Senior Day for the Jaspers. Manhattan won the first game, 22-7, before posting an 8-2 win in the nightcap to improve to 26-20, 14-8 in MAAC play and move into third place in the conference standings.

After seniors Matt Springer, Kyle Wirtz, Josh Santerre, Fitzpatrick, and Chris Cody were honored before the start of game one, the Manhattan bats came out on fire, scoring 10 runs over the first three innings. Fitzpatrick brought home all three in the first with a three-run homer to center. The three RBI moved him past Wendell Anderson '00 into first place on the Manhattan career RBI list, as the senior would complete the day having totaled 156 RBI for his Jasper career.

Manhattan would score four in the second on a single by Nick Derba, a steal of home by Nieto, and two bases loaded walks to Fitzpatrick and Ryan Marcoux, before adding the final three of the first three frames in the third, with the first scoring on a ball off the bat of Derba, and the final two scoring on a Fitzpatrick two-RBI double.

Saint Peter's would scratch out two runs in the fifth to make the score 10-2, but Manhattan's offense would respond with four runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh to open up an insurmountable lead. A Fitzpatrick RBI double would be followed by a Marcoux three run homer to provide the scoring in the fifth, while RBI doubles by Rizzotti and Dom Lombardi, an RBI sacrifice fly by Fitzpatrick, and an RBI single by Angel Aponte would account for the scoring in the sixth. In the seventh, Rizzotti's two-run homer was followed by a solo shot from Fitzpatrick, before an Aponte double would score the Jaspers final run of the game.

The Peacocks would rally for five runs in the eighth to provide the final margin.

Fitzpatrick's second homer of the day raised his season total to 11, which ties him for the single season Jasper record with John Murray, who also belted 11 in the 1989 season, which stands as the oldest record on the Manhattan books. Fitzpatrick also tallied at least one RBI in each plate appearance during the game, and his two doubles bring him one shy of tying the Manhattan career record of 55, also held by Anderson.

Cody picked up his Manhattan record ninth win of the season, striking out seven over 5.2 innings of work.

The Jasper offense would remain red-hot to open game two, scoring seven runs over the first two innings. A Mike Garcia RBI groundout and a Lombardi two-RBI double would plate three in the first. In the second, Nunzio Franzese would tally an RBI single, a Derba single would score two more, and A Fitzpatrick RBI sacrifice fly would make the score 7-0 after two innings.

Saint Peter's would score twice in the third, but Manhattan would score once in the fourth on a Marcoux single, and starter Santerre would combine with Wirtz and Brian Searls to keep the Peacocks off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Santerre picked up his second win of the season, allowing one hit and no earned runs over five innings of work. Wirtz and Searls would combine for three strikeouts while allowing just one hit and walking none to close things out as Manhattan won its fifth straight game.

Jeff Bayse would provide effective relief for Saint Peter's in both games, allowing no hits over a combined 3.1 innings of work.

The two teams will complete the three-game MAAC series with a single game tomorrow, Sunday, May 14, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
