Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (April 30, 2006)- For the second straight game in this weekend's MAAC series, extra innings were required to settle things, as Manhattan scored the go ahead run in the top of the tenth before Marist scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take the rubber match of the series, 4-3, this afternoon at McCann Field on the Marist campus. The Jaspers fall to 20-18, 10-7 in MAAC play, and fall out of the top four spots in the MAAC standings for the first time this season.
Manhattan got on the scoreboard first, as
Nunzio Franzese singled from
Dom Lombardi with two outs in the second. However, the Red Foxes would answer with a run in the bottom of the frame, on an RBI single by Travis Musolf.
The Jaspers would regain the lead in the fifth, as
Nick Derba's RBI sacrifice fly would plate
Eric Nieto, who tripled to open the frame. Once again, Marist would respond, scoring an unearned run in the seventh to knot the game at 2-2.
Neither team would score through the end of the scheduled nine innings, so the two sides played bonus baseball for the second straight game.
With one out in the top of the tenth, Franzese singled to center, and went first to third on a single through the right side by Nieto. Franzese would score one batter later on Derba's RBI sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the tenth, Marist put runners on first and second after a double and a Manhattan error, and, after an out an a walk to load the bases with one out, Musolf ended things with a two RBI single to left.
Josh Santerre worked the first 6.1 innings for Manhattan allowing one earned run, while
Kyle Wirtz worked the last 3.0 innings, also allowing one earned run.
Manhattan gets back to the diamond on Wednesday, May 3, when the Jaspers play their Bronx rival, Fordham, at 7:00 p.m. at the Rams' Houlihan Park. The game will be broadcast on GoJaspers.com with Ed Cohen and Martin Collins calling all the action.
