WOMEN'S LACROSSE BESTS MARIST, 12-10, TO EARN CHANCE TO DEFEND CROWN

Kingston, N.Y. (April 24, 2006)- Goalkeeper Ashley Devins made several keys stops to keep Marist from tying the score late in the second half, and Alicia Psillos took a pass from Jillian McGowan and scored a late insurance goal, as Manhattan clinched the fourth and final playoff spot in the MAAC playoffs with a 12-10 win over the Red Foxes tonight at Deitz Stadium. The postseason berth is the third in as many years for the Lady Jaspers, who are the two-time defending MAAC Tournament champions.

Marist came out of the gates quickly, putting up three quick tallies over the first 3:17 of the game. The Red Foxes used possession well, winning the first three draw controls and turning that into three goals.

Possession being an key factor to asserting an offense proved itself on the very next draw control, as Katelyn Williams won the draw, which led to a Molly Pheterson goal, getting the Lady Jaspers on the board at the 26:11 mark.

Just under five minutes later, Psillos scored her first of four goals on the day to pull Manhattan to within one goal, 3-2.

Marist scored the next two goals before the Lady Jaspers began to make their playoff push.

Lauren Civardi started things off with a goal off a Brenna Tinari pass to spark a 4-0 Manhattan run to end the opening stanza. Civardi would score again during the run, and Tinari would also notch a goal, as her's knotted the score at 5-5 with 5:07 to go before Pheterson took a pass from McGowan with 1:39 left before the break to send Manhattan into the locker room with a 6-5 lead, its first of the day, but a lead it would not relinquish.

Jenny Carman opened the second half with a goal at the 27:38 mark to give Manhattan a 7-5 lead before Marist scored twice over the next 4:06 to pull even at 7-7 with 23:32 to play.

Carman had her hand in the goal that put the Lady Jaspers ahead for good, finding Lauren Civardi, who beat the Marist keeper. Psillos score 1:30 later, and Carman recorded her second goal of the half, off a pass from Erin Warren, to open up a three goal, 10-7, advantage with 18:58 left on the clock.

The Red Foxes used two free position shots to pull within a goal once more, closing to within 10-9 with 12:48 left in the game. Psillos scored off a pass from Warren and a goal by Marist with 9:44 left, which made the score 11-10, set the stage and began the crescendo of drama that culminated in the dramatic finish

Ashley Devins made 10 saves, none larger than her game-saving stop late in the game, for her seventh win of the season.
