GAME 2 BOXSCORERiverdale, N.Y. (April 15, 2006)- The Manhattan offense left 10 men on base in the first game, then the Jasper bullpen surrendered a late lead in the nightcap as Manhattan dropped both ends of a MAAC doubleheader to Fairfield this afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park. The Stags won game one, 1-0, before posting a 7-4 win in game two. The Jaspers fall to 14-14 on the season, 7-4 in MAAC play, while Fairfield improves to 11-17, 6-5 in MAAC play.
In the opener, Manhattan starter
Chris Cody and Fairfield starter Paul DeMarco traded goose-eggs over the first seven innings, allowing just six hits combined over that span.
The Jaspers loaded the bases with two outs in the third, but could not push across a run, and had runners on second and third with one out in the fifth, but again could not come up with a big hit.
The Stags finally broke through in the eighth. Jim Girolamo reached on a swinging bunt with one out and then stole second. Adam Chilelli then reached on an error by Manhattan, with Girolamo scoring on the play.
Dan Gallagher worked the final two innings for the save, allowing no hits.
Cody went the distance for the Jaspers, striking out five while scattering four hits and allowing no earned runs. De Marco worked seven strong innings for Fairfield, allowing just four hits while working around six walks.
Both teams hit better in the nightcap, as Fairfield scored twice in the top of the first on a two run homer by John Scaife. Manhattan would respond with single runs in the first and second to knot the score at 2-2. The first run would score on a double steal, with
Eric Nieto scoring, and the second when
Ruben Perez scored on a throwing error by Fairfield.
The Stags would regain the lead in the third on a Scaife sacrifice fly, but the Jaspers would tie the score again in the fifth on a leadoff homer by
Nunzio Franzese, before rallying to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Dom Lombardi singled between two Manhattan outs, before Perez tripled to the right centerfield gap to score Lombardi with the go-ahead run.
Mike Gazzola came on to attempt to earn his first collegiate save, but was touched up for three runs on three hits before giving way to
Kyle Wirtz, who allowed one unearned run.
Gallagher again came on to close things out for the Stags, working a perfect seventh for his second save of the day and fifth of the season.
The two teams conclude the series on Monday, April 17, with a single nine-inning game at 1:00 p.m.
