Riverdale, N.Y. (April 1, 2006)-
Lauren Civardi tallied a career-high five goals to lead Manhattan to a 14-10 MAAC win over Niagara this morning at Gaelic Park in the Lady Jaspers' home opener. Manhattan improves to 3-4, 1-0 MAAC, while the Purple Eagles fall to 4-4, 0-1 MAAC.
The teams traded goals over the first 15 minutes, until Manhattan scored three straight to open up a 5-3 lead, with four different Lady Jaspers, Civardi,
Brenna Tinari,
Jillian McGowan, and
Jenny Carman, scoring goals.
After a Niagara goal made the score 5-4, Manhattan extended the run of goals to 7-1, scoring the last three goals of the half to go into the break with an 8-4 lead, and scoring the first goal of the second half to go up 9-4.
It looked like the Lady Jaspers were in control at that point, but Niagara would not go away, scoring the next four goals over a five minute span to pull within one, 9-8, with 20:41 left in the game.
But the day would belong to Manhattan, as the Lady Jaspers would push the lead back to six with a five goal run over the next 19 minutes to put the game away.
The Purple Eagles would score two goals in the final minute to make provide the final margin.
Civardi would add one assist for a six point day, while Carman would record two goals and three assists, and
Alicia Psillos would chip in with one goal and three assists.
Molly Pheterson (two goals), and
Brenna Tinari (one goal, one assist) also tallied multi-point days for Manhattan.
Ashley Devins picked up the win, making nine saves.
Manhattan is back in action tomorrow, Sunday, April 1, taking on Canisius at 10:00 a.m.
