Denver, Colo. (February 25, 2006)--Senior midfielder
Greg Lewis opened up the 2006 season with an unassisted goal to boost Manhattan Men's Lacrosse to an early 1-0 lead at No. 20 Denver just over a minute into the contest, but Manhattan highlights were few and far between the rest of the way. The Denver offense exploded and the Jasper attack was unable to get much going en route to a 19-2 triumph by the Pioneers in the opening game of the Pioneer Face-off Classic.
Following Lewis' tally, Denver answered with five straight goals, including back-to-back scores by Brandon Barcus. Jasper attackman
Brian Murray, who tallied 12 goals and 12 assists last season for Manhattan, stopped the Pioneer run by finding the back of the net with 3:55 remaining in the opening period. Lewis picked up his second point of the day by assisting on the goal, which made it 5-2 in favor of Denver.
Denver's Adam Goodwin, however, answered right back with a goal of his own just over a minute later to give the Pioneers a 6-2 advantage at the end of the first frame.
Manhattan junior goalkeeper
Justin Henry, a 2005 Second Team All-MAAC selection, had a busy day in net as 51 shots came his way, 27 of which were on goal. Henry managed eight stops for the contest. On the other hand, Manhattan's attack recorded only 16 shots, six of which were on goal.
Manhattan looks to rebound tomorrow as the Jaspers face off against the Air Force Academy on day two of the Pioneer Face-off Classic. Game-time is 1:00 p.m. EST.
