Riverdale, N.Y. (October 30, 2006)-On senior day at Gaelic Park, the Manhattan women's soccer team closed out the most successful season in team history with a 2-2 draw against MAAC rival Rider College. Prior to the game, the Lady Jaspers' three seniors,
Katie Kuntz,
Jess Garcia and
Christine Abrams were honored in a ceremony prior to the game.
Though they knew going into the game that they wouldn't be going to the MAAC playoffs, the Lady Jaspers were looking to give their three graduating players a proper send-off, as well as follow up their monumental win over Loyola with another over Rider. Also at stake; the chance to tack on another win to their already record breaking win total of 12.
Things looked promising for Manhattan early on. Freshman
Alexandra Konneker, who had a game high five shots, put Manhattan in front in the 26th minute with a 10 yard shot from the left side of the field that beat Rider goalie Kim Carter.
In the second half, Abrams made sure her final game in the green and white would be a memorable one, scoring six minutes into the half on a shot from seven yards out.
Down 2-0, Rider began to claw back with a goal by Stephanie Madden. As the second half wound down, both Abrams and Garcia had chances to score but were either denied by Carter or their shots went just wide. Manhattan would end up needing an insurance goal as Madden scored again with just 45 seconds remaining, sending the game into overtime.
In the extra frame, both Garcia and Konneker had chances on net, but shot wide. In her final game, Garcia was second on the team in shots with four, while Kuntz had two.
For the season, Manhattan finishes 12-5-2, and 4-3-2 in the MAAC, good for fifth place. They also finish 6-1-1 at home
