Lawrenceville, N.J. (January 21, 2006)--Post players
Caitlin Flood and
Kelly Regan netted a game-high 16 points apiece to help Manhattan Women's Basketball to its second convincing victory over MAAC member Rider, 78-48, on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gym on the Rider campus. With the victory the Lady Jaspers improve to 7-10 overall and even their MAAC record at 4-4, while the Broncs fall to 2-15 and 1-7 in league play.
Flood and Regan, who were a combined 14-23 from the field, played a major role in Manhattan taking control of the game about midway through the first half. After Rider's Chris Catalanotto knocked down a rightside jumper to give the Broncs their only lead of the game with 14:44 showing on the clock, the Manhattan offense opened the flood gates. Less than a minute later, Flood grabbed an offensive rebound and converted on the put back to knot the game at 8-8.
Then, following a steal by sophomore guard
Gabrielle Cottrell just seconds later, Flood took a pass from freshman guard
Annie McIntyre and laid it up and in to put Manhattan in front for good. Over a 3:20 span, the Lady Jaspers enjoyed a 12-0 run to build an 18-8 lead.
Later on in the opening half, Regan scored buckets on three straight Jasper possessions en route to a new career-high and a 35-22 Manhattan advantage of the break.
Manhattan continued its strong and potent offensive showing in the second half as Flood opened the Lady J's scoring with two free throws less than a minute into the period. The Lady Jaspers increased their 13-point half-time advantage to 25 with 12:44 remaining in the game as junior forward
Larie Dew, who finished with eight points, buried a long jumper.
Sophomore guard
Joann Nwafili was the third Lady J to score in double figures as she finished with 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds. As a team, Manhattan shot a stellar 55 percent from the field. Rider guard Monica Welborn led the Broncs with 11 points.
Manhattan resumes MAAC play as the Lady Jaspers take the short trip up to Westchester county to take on the Iona Gaels at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 27.
