GAME 2 BOXSCORE
Riverdale, NY (April 21, 2005)- After dropping a 1-0 decision in the first game of today's non-conference double header at Gaelic Park, the Manhattan bats came alive, as the Lady Jaspers defeated the Wagner College Seahawks, 6-4, in the nightcap. Manhattan improves to 15-17, while Wagner falls to 23-11.
In the nightcap, Manhattan plated four runs in the bottom of the second to take a quick lead. With runners on second and third with one out, Candice Sheridan connected on an RBI single, her first RBI on the season, to score Fox, who has led off the inning with a walk. After Sheridan stole second to again put runners on second and third, Kerry Cook reached on a fielding error by the Seahawk second baseman, scoring Tina Buyea. Liz Strein followed with a two-RBI single, scoring Cook and Sheridan to give the Lady Jaspers a 4-0 advantage.
Wagner got a run back in the top of the third on a solo homer off the bat of Kate Refsnyder, but Manhattan put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the frame on a two-run blast by Fox to dead center field. The homer is the 10 of the season for Fox, the first time a Lady Jasper has reached double digits in homers. Manhattan now has 19 homers as a team, the most since the 1993 season. Fox also increased her RBI total to 24, which equals the most by a Lady Jasper since Erin McNamara during the 2000 season.
The Seahawks attempted a comeback in the top of the seventh, plating three runs, but Manhattan starter Liz Pennino induced a comebacker to end the game. Pennino went the distance, picking up her third win of the season.
In the opener, Wagner started the game with a single and a run scoring double, scoring the only run of the game. Manhattan starter Jill Medea would not allow a hit the rest of the way, but the Lady Jaspers could manage just two hits off Wagner starter Dara Gadziala. Each pitcher tallied six strikeouts.
Manhattan gets back in action Saturday, April 23, when the Lady Jaspers host Rider for a MAAC twin bill slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
