Staten Island, NY (March 22, 2005)- The women's lacrosse team lost in the final minute against the Wagner Seahawks in Staten Island, NY today, 14-13. Senior
Victoria Carman led the Jaspers scoring four goals and tallying two assists. The Lady J's overall record drops to 0-3-0, while Wagner's record improves to 2-4.
Manhattan took an early 2-0 lead through the first three minutes on goals by sophomore
Catherine Dunbar and junior
Molly Pheterson but Wagner battled back and took a 5-3 edge with 17:51 to go in the first half. Manhattan scored the final three goals of the half. Senior
Mary Dudek scored the tying goal with just four seconds left in the half, 6-6.
The Jaspers scored two goals to a take an 8-6 advantage through the first 10:30 of the second half but neither team would hold more than a one-goal lead the rest of the way after a goal from Seahawk junior Heather George at the 16:52 mark. George's goal tied the game at 8-8.
The lead went back and forth for the rest of the game.
Victoria Carman scored the tying goal with 3:42 left to play off a free position shot but Wagner scored the final goal with 1:01 remaining in regulation to take a 14-13 victory.
Pheterson ended the game with a hat trick and senior
Jamie Carter tallied three assists.
Sophomore
Ashley Devins made seven saves in goal, while senior goalie Erica Brown made 12 saves for the Seahawks.
Manhattan plays its first MAAC Conference game on Thursday, March 24 against Iona at 3:00 p.m. at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
