Cathy Mitchell tallied two goals, and
Caitlin Newkirk supplied her second straight game-winning goal, as Manhattan shut out Delaware State, 4-0, this afternoon in a non-conference game. The Lady Jaspers improve their record to 5-8-1 in winning their second consecutive game, as the Manhattan defense shut down the opposing offense, allowing just one shot.
Newkirk provided all the offense Manhattan would need at the 15:44 mark, giving the Lady Jaspers a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Jasper offense would pressure the Hornet net all game, as Manhattan outshot Delaware State 36-1, with 22 shots coming the opening stanza. The lone shot that Delaware State would tally would come at the 19:14 mark, as Ashley Fischer's shot sailed wide.
After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, the Lady Jaspers made better use of their scoring chances, tallying three makers to give Manhattan the 4-0 win.
Chrissy Reina put the Lady Jaspers up, 2-0, at the 66:54 mark, before
Cathy Mitchell found the back of the net twice, at the 73:14 mark and the 89:40 mark, to provide the final margin.
Christina Benenour recorded 14 saves, while
Kiera Fox was not tested in net at all in recording the clean sheet.
Manhattan returns to the pitch on Monday, October 10, as the Lady Jaspers play Virginia Military Institute at 2:00 p.m. in Lexington, Va.
