Niagara Falls, NY (April 30, 2004) - The Manhattan College women's lacrosse team defeated Marist 17-11, in the semifinals of the MAAC Tournament, held earlier today at Niagara University. First Team All-MAAC selection, Victoria Carmen led the way for the Lady Jaspers with four goals, and two assists, totaling six points. With the victory the Lady Jaspers advance to the MAAC Championship game against #1 LeMoyne this Sunday, May 8. This marks the second time in four years that the Lady Jaspers have gone to the Championship game. Manhattan improves its overall record to 10-7 on the season.
The Red Foxes started off the scoring in the first half with a goal by Tara Mullins, giving Marist the early 1-0 lead. The Lady Jaspers responded by netting two straight goals by senior co-captain
Nora Jacquette and
Victoria Carman, giving Manhattan the 2-1 edge, just six minutes into the contest. Marist, .15 seconds later, evened the score with a goal, 2-2. Two straight goals by senior co-captain Second Team All-MAAC selection,
Mary Dudek quickly gave Manhattan the 4-2 lead. Dudek and Jacquette would combine for four goals in the remainder of the half, helping the Lady Jaspers take the 9-4 lead into the half.
Sophomore
Catherine Dunbar netted the fourth straight goal and first of the second half, making the score 10-4. Marist cut the lead to four with two goals in .23 seconds, 10-6. The Lady Jaspers bounced back and extended their lead, with three straight goals, which including goals by Jacquette, First Team All-MAAC selection
Molly Pheterson, and Carman, giving the Lady Jaspers the 13-6 lead. After a Maria Reoch goal for Marist, Manhattan netted three straight goals again, including two from
Jamie Carter and one from Carman, propelling the Lady Jasper lead to 15-7. The Red Foxes bounced back and cut the lead to four by netting four straight goals. Dunbar would tally the 17th and final goal of the game, capturing the semifinal MAAC Championship contest.
Carman, Jacquette and Dudek all netted four goals. Dunbar recording two goals and one assist, totaling three points. Carter netted two goals and Pheterson tallied one. Freshman goaltender
Ashley Devins recorded 11 saves in the victory.
Manhattan will play LeMoyne on Sunday, May 1 at 12 pm in the MAAC Championship game. If the Lady Jaspers advance they would earn a spot in the NCAA Play-In game at home on Thursday, May 8.
