New Britain, CT (April 20, 2004)- Kristin Gelsleichter and Jillian Medea combined on a five hit shutout in game one, and Kiera Fox and Marina Ysaac each had two-RBI in game two as Manhattan swept a twin bill at Central Connecticut State today. The Lady Jaspers took game one, 1-0, in eight innings, and game two, 5-2. Manhattan runs its win streak to five straight games.
In the first game, Gelsleichter (1-1) went the first seven innings, allowing no runs while scattering five hits for her first win of the season. In the top of the eighth, the international tiebreaker was instituted, which placed Ysaac on second to start the inning. Ysaac stole third and was driven home by a Jennifer McCracken RBI single. Medea came on to pitch the bottom of the inning and worked a 1-2-3 inning for the her first save of the year.
In game two, the Blue Devils jumped out to an early, 2-0 lead on Manhattan starter Elizabeth Pennino on two RBI singles. The Lady Jaspers pulled with one in the top of the fourth, as Erika Kostik was driven home on a Fox RBI sacrifice fly. In the top of the sixth, Manhattan blew the game open, scoring four runs. Fox drove home the McCracken with the first run. A bases loaded walk to Michelle Gutierrez put the Lady Jaspers up 3-2 before Ysaac put the game away with a two-RBI single, scoring Stefanie Gozdziewski and Fox.
Pennino picked up her first win of the season, going five innings, allowing one earned run while striking out three. She gave way to Medea in the sixth, and Medea shut the door, allowing just one hit in two innings for her second save of the day.
