Riverdale, NY (April 20, 2004)- After Sacred Heart jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Manhattan scored six unanswered runs to take a 6-2 non-conference win today at Van Cortlandt Park. The Jaspers improve to 11-17-1 behind seven strong innings from
Ken Gleason and two-RBI performances from both
Josh Greco and
John Maser.
Sacred Heart (4-27) plated a run in the top of the first on an RBI groundout by Curtis Lewsey, and a run in the second on an RBI double by Tim Lantz.
The Jaspers pulled to within one in the bottom of the second on a solo blast to left by Greco before evening the score at 2-2 when, on a delayed double steal,
Sam Deluca was able to score from third on a throwing error by the Sacred Heart catcher.
Manhattan would take the lead in the bottom of the third, as
Frank Cappello scored on a sacrifice fly by
Matt Cucurullo. The Jaspers would add two more in the bottom of the fourth on a two-RBI double by Maser.
Greco would add insurance in the bottom of the eighth, as his sacrifice fly plated Cucurullo.
After allowing the two early runs, Gleason (1-1) would settle down, allowing just two more hits until giving way to
Mike Parisi in the eighth. Parisi allowed one hit while striking out five in two innings of work to earn his first save of the year. Chris Aldrich (0-1) took the loss for Sacred Heart.
Jay Maiella and Anthony Diaz each went 2-4 for the Pioneers.
Manhattan gets back in action on Wednesday, April 21, when the Jaspers take on Hofstra in Hempstead, NY. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
