Brooklyn, NY (March 31, 2004)- Manhattan snuck past Long Island University, 10-9, in women's lacrosse action at LIU Field.
Lauren Civardi led Manhattan with three goals. The Lady Jaspers are now 4-4 overall, and the Blackbirds are now 2-7.
LIU's Amy Rizzo registered the first goal just 45 seconds into the game, but the lead was short-lived with Jasper attacker Mary Dudek responding with a free-position goal at the 1:59 mark to even the score. The frantic pace continued for most of the first half with the teams trading goals. Manhattan held a 5-4 advantage at intermission.
Manhattan expanded its lead to two goals, 6-4, two minutes into the second stanza when sophomore Molly Pheterson tallied her second goal of the game. LIU would push forward, tying the contest yet again. Blackbirds's Jackie McCormick and Rizzo netted back-to-back goals at 3:53 and 5:43, respectively to tie the contest at 6-6.
The Lady J's took back the lead on a goal from Lauren Civardi, her third of the game at the 10:09 mark. Less than two minutes later McCormick took a pass from teammate Nichole Lopez and finished the equalizer into the net for LIU. Lopez's goal gave the Blackbirds their first lead of the second half, 8-7, at the 13:39 mark.
Manhattan took control from there, scoring three of the next four goals to pull out the victory. The third to last goal came from freshman Jenny Carman with under fifteen minutes to play. After Rizzo scored her fourth goal of the game to put LIU up, 8-7, Catherine Dunbar received a pass from Civardi tying the game 8-8. With under nine minutes left of regulation Victoria Carman scored her first goal of the game giving Manhattan a 10-9 lead.
Ashley Devins had ten saves for the Lady Jaspers, while LIU's starting goalkeeper Patricia Parker had seven.
The Lady Jaspers play their first conference game on Saturday, April 3 when they host Canisius at 11 am.
