Staten Island, NY (March 23, 2004) - Women's lacrosse snuck past Wagner, 9-8 in overtime this afternoon at the Wagner College Stadium. Manhattan improves to 3-2 on the season while Wagner falls to 0-6. Manhattan snapped a four-game losing streak to the Seahawks.
In the back and forth contest, Manhattan jumped out to a 2-0 advantage on
unassisted goals by
Nora Jacquette and
Victoria Carman. Wagner senior Jill
Pyzik tallied an unassisted goal of her own with 12 minutes to go in the
first half to cut the Jasper lead to 2-1 and that was how the teams went to
halftime.
Leann Matta scored another goal for Wagner just four minutes into the second
half to tie the game at 2-2 before the Jaspers scored three straight goals.
Molly Peterson scored after taking a feed from Jacquette. Six minutes
later,
Jamie Carter tallied her only goal of the game on a free position
shot, and 22 seconds later,
Erin Warren notched her lone goal of the game to
give Manhattan a 5-2 lead.
The teams would swap goals as Wagner's Darby Biggart tallied before MC's
Jacquette scored her second goal of the game over the course of the next
twelve minutes before Wagner scored three more times in the final four
minutes, courtesy of two more goals by Pyzik and the first goal of the
afternoon by Cathy Caballero as Wagner took a 7-6 advantage with just
59 seconds in regulation.
Just when the Seahawks think they have won the game, Manhattan's
Jenny Carman tied the game with 33 seconds left scoring her first of two goals.
Each team scored in the first overtime period. Biggart recorded her second
goal of the contest within the first minute of overtime action but Manhattan
would not go quietly as
Mary Dudek scored a pretty goal with 1:20 left after
taking a pass from
Erin Warren.
The teams played even in the second overtime session for the first 2:30
before Manhattan's Erin Dudek assisted on a
Jenny Carman goal to make the
score 9-8.
Manhattan received two goals apiece from Jacquette and
Jenny Carman while
Dudek, Warren, Carter, Victoria Carmen and Molly Peterson all scored goals.
Wagner was led by Pyzik who scored four goals while Biggart added two
tallies. Sophomore Heather George chipped in with two assists while Matta
added a goal and an assist and Caballero notched a goal.
Manhattan's
Ashley Devins notched 12 saves on the afternoon. Wagner's Erica Brown made 14 saves on the afternoon including three goals in the overtime periods.
Manhattan will be in action again on Saturday, March 27, when they host Mt. St. Mary's
at 3:30pm.
