Riverdale, NY (November 29, 2003)- Manhattan senior
Dave Holmes led five Jaspers in double-figures with 22 points, while pulling down a game-high nine boards to lead the Jaspers to a 90-77 win over Fordham (0-3) in the Battle of the Bronx in front of a sellout crowd at Draddy Gym on the Manhattan campus. Manhattan improves to 2-0 on the season and has now won three Battle of the Bronx games in a row, and four of the last five.
In a foul-plagued game, Fordham tied the game at 7-7 with 15:53 left in the first half on a dunk by Michael Haynes before the Jaspers scored the next seven points to take a lead they would never relinquish. Manhattan pushed the lead to 13 points on four occasions before the half, the last on a
Jason Wingate jumper as the horn sounded to end the opening stanza. The Jaspers led, 42-29 at the break.
Manhattan pushed the lead to as many as 21 points in the second half, and the Rams never got closer than 13 the rest of the way as the Jaspers improves to 2-0 for the second straight season. The Jaspers shot 46.6 percent in the game, while shooting an impressive 93.3 percent (28-30) from the line. Manhattan forced 17 turnovers and tallied 11 steals, converting that into 26 points.
All five Manhattan starters scored in double figures, as Holmes scored 22,
Luis Flores added 20, joining
Mike Konovelchick (16),
Jason Wingate (14), and
Peter Mulligan (10) in double-figures. Wingate's total is a career-high. Fordham's John Blackgrove led all scorers with a game-high 27 points.
The Jaspers return to action on Tuesday, December 2, when they host Wichita State at 7:00 p.m. at Draddy Gym.
