RIVERDALE, NY– The Manhattan Jaspers women's basketball team (10-8, 4-5 MAAC) fell against the Mountaineers of Mount St. Mary's (MD) by a score of 80-66 inside Draddy Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Graduate forward Leyla Ozturk scored with a driving layup for the Jaspers. Followed by a Hana Muhl triple to extend its early lead.
- Four of the first six baskets in the opening stanza were assisted by graduate forward Ines Gimenez Monserrat.
- Off a Manhattan turnover to open the second quarter, junior guard Brianna Davis set the tone on the defensive end with a block against the Mountaineers' Hoddinott.
- Getting the start in lieu of the injured Nitzan Amar, sophomore guard Tegan Young brought the Mount lead within one on a driving layup.
- The aforementioned Young put the Jaspers back in front with a high-arching three-pointer. Manhattan concluded the first half on a 9-0 run and completed five-of-six from the floor heading into the locker room.
- After a sluggish start to the second half, the Jaspers were able to string together an 11-2 run in a span of 93 seconds, thanks to back-to-back threes courtesy of Hana Muhl and Tegan Young to put Manhattan back in front.
- Trailing down the stretch of the third quarter, saw Young land home another three-point basket to tie the game at 48 before the Mount was able to make a jump shot in the closing seconds.
- With both programs trading three-pointers, Gimenez-Monserrat stopped the Jasper bleeding to narrow the lead back to single digits halfway through the final stanza.
- Davis converted a four-point following a foul along the perimeter to bring the Jaspers within 10 of the Mountaineers.
STATS AND NOTES
- Sophomore Tegan Young logged a career-high 23 points in seven-of-10 shooting from the floor this afternoon. Five of six came from beyond the arc. The second-year guard was a perfect four-of-four from the charity stripe.
- Junior guard Hana Muhl logged 11 points, grabbed seven boards, and added one block in 38 minutes on the floor.
- Graduate forward Leyla Ozturk recorded 10 points in five-of-nine shooting. Ozturk grabbed four caroms, assisted on two buckets, and added one block to her resume.
- Junior guard Brianna Davis made a valiant effort as the team's sixth woman, giving the Jaspers eight points and three assists in 16 minutes.
QUOTES FROM THE JASPERS
Head Coach Heather Vulin on performance: "Obviously a tough MAAC battle. We're down a little bit in terms of numbers. I also think fatigue was a factor going into the fourth quarter. We have to give credit to Mount St. Mary's. They are playing great basketball right now. Credit to Tegan (Young). She really battled and shot the ball well today."
Vulin continued: "We've got to make sure we're tougher and handle the ball better. We also need to be tougher against the press. We've got to make sure that we value rebounds. We gave way too many, leading to second-chance points, and I feel that was the difference today."
