Daytona Beach, FL — The Jaspers wrapped up play in the Bash at the Beach falling to Portland 3-1 on Saturday. After dropping the first set, Manhattan emerged victorious in the second set (25-23) before Portland bounced back running away with the third and fourth sets.

(22-25, 25-23, 14-25, 14-25)

The first set featured 9 lead changes and was a battle until the very end before Portland closed things out with a 25-22 win. The turning point for the Pilots came late when Taina Kaauwai secured a kill and back-to-back service aces to give Portland a 17-15 lead. A kill from senior outside hitter Maike Bertens—1 of 5 kills for Bertens in the first set—drew Manhattan back to within 2 at 21-19, but back-to-back kills from Maui Robins increased the Portland lead to 4 which proved too much to overcome.

Manhattan responded with a poised second set win, 25-23. The close call shifted in Manhattan's favor thanks to the stellar play of both Maike Bertens and sophomore right-side hitter Laila Glover, who combined for 13 kills in the second. Additionally, Manhattan benefitted from 7 errors from Portland in the second set.

The Jaspers were unable to capitalize on their newfound momentum from winning the second set, and consequently could not salvage their final game of the Bash at the Beach.  Bertens finished with 18 kills and 11 digs in the loss to Portland, and was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts. She finished the three-game stretch with a total of 48 kills and 26 digs. J

Junior setter Sarah Emmons wrapped up her tournament in regular form by securing 39 assists against Portland. She also had 35 assists against BCU and 24 against Stetson on Friday.

Sophomore outside hitter Mikalah Curran returned to action on Saturday after missing the second game on Friday against Stetson.  Across her two games in Daytona, Curran compiled 27 kills and 18 digs.

Next Time Out

Manhattan will look to get back on track next weekend at the Big Apple Invitational. The Jaspers will face off with Fordham (0-2) and host school Columbia (0-0) on Friday, Sept. 6 before concluding the weekend against Syracuse (3-0) on Saturday.
