Boiling Springs, NC – Manhattan Jaspers baseball was held to a mere two hits by the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs Friday evening, while the foe capitalized in four of seven innings played, to take a 14-2 victory in the series opener at Bill Masters Field at John Henry Moss Stadium.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Bulldogs (3-9), while the Jaspers continue to fight on the road, falling to 4-6 on the season.
"Today was a bad day all around for us. We have had a long stretch on the road and it showed tonight. We will get back after it tomorrow … move on and upward," said head coach Dave Miller.
The Jaspers clocked their two runs of the night on a career-first 2RBI homer from Andreaus Lewis in the top of the fifth.
Alongside Lewis, Drew Myers tallied a hit for Manhattan, going 1-for-3 on the day.
The Bulldogs took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, matched runs in the fourth, and tacked on two more to go up 8-2 after five full innings. The Bulldogs capped scoring with a six-run sixth that the Jaspers could not overcome.
Blake Brogden was credited with his first win in his six-inning outing on the mound. Brogden faced 22 batters, allowed two hits and two runs with 11 strikeouts.
Justin Solimine was saddled with tonight's loss (1-3) after 3.1 innings of work.
Tonight's series opener is the first of four games against the Bulldogs. The foes take the field Saturday at 4 p.m. and then again Sunday at noon for a doubleheader.
