RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan softball team hosted their home opener today, as they hosted Kent State for a doubleheader. The Jaspers got swept today losing game one, 7-0 and game two 8-1.
Game 1 – Kent State 7, Manhattan 0
Kent State would open up scoring in the second inning, with an RBI double from Brynn Libler. They would add another run in the third on a sacrifice fly. The Golden Flashes opened the game up in the fifth when they got a solo home run from Delaney Robeson, followed by a two-run home run from Savannah Wing to extend the lead to 6-0. Despines would add one more insurance run in the sixth, to finish the game up 7-0.
Macy Ireland picked up the win for Kent State, tossing a three-hit shutout, adding 11 strikeouts. Ava Metzger got the start for the Jaspers, throwing four innings, before she was relieved by Alexandra Hess and Karissa Spring.
Game 2 - Kent State 8, Manhattan 1
Kent State would score first, connecting on an RBI double in the first inning. Sophia Kiseloski would strike a solo home run in the second, tying the score at 1-1.
Emily Lippe struck a two-run home run to center field in the third inning, breaking the tie, and giving the Golden Flashes a 3-1 lead. Kent State would add two insurance runs in the fifth, before Lippe would add another two-run home run in the seventh, to extend the lead to 8-1.
Mollie Charest started the game for the Jaspers, throwing 4 1/3 innings, before being relieved by Spring who would finish the game. Megan Nuechterlein threw a complete game for Kent State, allowing one earned run.
UP NEXT: The Jaspers will stay at Gaelic Park Sunday to finish the series with the Golden Flashes, for one final game at 11 a.m.
