RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Manhattan College men's soccer used an explosive first-half performance to pick up the 4-0 victory over Canisius in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener.
"What an amazing start to MAAC Conference play as we continue to battle back to our best," said head coach Jorden Scott. "MAAC games are only about wins and although we have a long way to go, 4 goals and a clean sheet gives us the belief in our process. I am proud of the staff and players for their relentless energy to get us back on track."
It was a beautiful day at Gaelic Park which saw the Jaspers (1-3-2, 1-0-0 MAAC) start MAAC play with a W, as they scored a season-high four goals, led by two from senior Sebastiano Musu, who was on fire this afternoon.
Musu used a shake-and-bake two-step to give the Jaspers a 1-0 advantage in the 19th minute for his first goal of the season.
Ensa Sanneh scored his first goal of the season, as he added an insurance goal for Manhattan in the 28th minute when he found an opening in the top left side of the net to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team.
Next, it was James Cotter who served up a pass from the left side of the field that landed perfectly at Musu's feet for the striker to record his second goal of the match in the 30th minute.
The Jaspers continued to apply pressure to the Golden Griffs. This time it was Malo Blondeau who received a pass from Cotter off a corner kick for his first goal of the season.
Having a heck of a day was the Manhattan defense. Goalkeeper Danny DiMarco made five saves in goal. The Jasper defense protected the box well enough to keep Canisius from being able to attempt a legitimate shot on goal.
The Golden Griffs (1-5-1, 0-1-0 MAAC) dropped their first conference match of the season.
The Jaspers held the advantage in shots (25-6), shots on goal (12-5), and corner kicks (8-1) to pick up their sixth straight win over Canisius.
Manhattan will return to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. for Senior Day versus Fordham. The ceremony will be held prior to the start of the match.
