LONG ISLAND, N.Y. - Manhattan women's basketball defeated Hofstra University today at David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex, 53-45.
Petra Juric led Manhattan, scoring 17 points and 9 rebounds. Anne Bair added 12 points and 6 rebounds. Jade Blagrove recorded 7 points and 5 rebounds.
"We knew toughness had to be a part of this win and we felt every one of our players brought it today," said head coach Heather Vulin. "This was a great road win against a well-coached CAA opponent. Now we are excited to focus on MAAC play."
Hofstra (6-5) jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, before Manhattan (8-3) answered with a convincing 15-0 run to end the first quarter, giving the Jaspers a 19-10 lead after the first period. In the second quarter, the teams went back and forth, ending in the Pride scoring four last-minute points, trimming the lead down to 34-28.
In the third quarter, Hofstra jumped out to an 11-3 scoring run to take the lead for the first time since the first quarter, 39-37. Manhattan immediately responded, going on an 8-0 run in the final two minutes of the period, taking a 45-39 lead into the fourth.
Hofstra cut the lead to 45-43 with 4:33 remaining in the fourth quarter but this was as close as they would get to reclaiming the lead. Manhattan would extend the lead to 48-43 before Hofstra answered with a layup to cut it to 48-45. The Jaspers defense would not allow another point for the rest of the game and the Jaspers would walk away with a 53-45 victory.
Zyheima Swint led Hofstra with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Hofstra shot 33.9% from the field and 29.4% from three-point.
Manhattan will play at home against Siena College on Thur, Jan. 4 at 11 a.m. for Field Trip Day.
