Manhattan (1-3) went up one run in the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly to center field from David Bermudez to bring in Frankie Marinelli. Dolan Ocasal hit a double to right-center in the third inning to advance Trevor Santon into scoring position. Marinelli followed that with a sacrifice ground out to score Santos. Later in the inning, Ocasal scored off a Bermudez single through the left side of the Spartan infield. Manhattan added three runs in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 7-6.
USC-Upstate (4-1) took a 7-2 lead in the bottom half of the second inning. Noah Sullivan hit a homer to the left-center to bring in two runs. Noah Rabon then followed with an inside-the-park home run.
The Spartans plated six in the fifth and four more in the sixth. In the seventh, Manhattan pitcher Ryan Doherty kept USC-Upstate off the scoreboard, adding a strikeout before the Spartans scored two more in the eighth to lead 21-7.
Tyler Fagler got the start for the Jaspers, lasting 3.2 innings. The graduate student had a strikeout while allowing nine runs.
Manhattan is back in action tomorrow at one in Clinton, S.C. against Presbyterian.
