Seahawks Hold off Jaspers in Narrow Loss

Staten Island, NY- The Jaspers faced a tough opponent in the Seahawks with a 54-50 loss on the road against Wagner in the seventeenth contest between the two schools. 

The Jaspers entered today's contest with a 4-2 overall record, looking for their third straight win after defeating fellow Northeast Conference (NEC) member, Fairleigh Dickinson, 69-55, earlier this week at home.

Three Jaspers are averaging double-figures, led by junior captain Dee Dee Davis (Bronx, NY), who is pouring in 14.5 points per game. Courtney Warley (West Chester, PA) continues her stellar season averaging a double-double, scoring 12.7 ppg and pulling down 12.5 rebounds per game. Junior Brazil Harvey-Carr (Camden, NJ) adds to the high-powered offense of the Jaspers averaging 10.3 points per game. 

Heading into tonight's game, Manhattan has averaged 65.2 points per game while shooting 41.8 percent from the field, out-rebounding their opponents by nine caroms a contest (41.7 - 32.5). 

The Jaspers' defense proved to be difficult for the Seahawks during the first half, creating ten steals and seventeen rebounds.

In the third, the Jaspers were able to cut the difference and take the lead twice ending the period with Wagner up by one, 34-33, while grabbing twelve rebounds, seven of them on the defensive end. 

The Seahawks came out firing in the fourth starting on a 0-7 run, taking the lead 41-33. The end of the fourth quarter proved to be a tight contest with the Jaspers fighting back managing three ties. However, the Jaspers failed to take the lead, en route to a 54-50 loss against Wagner.

Harvey- Carr scored a game-high 15 points and was 5-of-13 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the line, and 2-for-9 from behind the ar. Harvey-Carr pulled down an additional eight rebounds. Junior guard Davis added 12 points, three rebounds, and five assists to the Jasper resume on the night.

Freshman forward Petra Juric (Zagreb, Croatia) made a splash scoring seven points going 3-4 from the floor, and added four rebounds, all of them on the offensive end.  

The Jaspers finished the game with 39 rebounds, eight assists, and one block. Ending with an impressive seventeen steals compared to the Seahawks seven. On the offensive end, the Jaspers were able to convert 15 points off turnovers and score nine fast breakpoints. Using their height to their advantage the Jaspers were able to score 24 points in the paint.

Picked second in the NEC 2021-22 Preseason Poll Wagner improves their record to 5-1. The Seahawks were led by senior guard Zhaneia Thybulle who grabbed eleven points and eight rebounds. 

After today's game, the Jaspers' overall record is 4-3. Manhattan's next game will be against Fordham on the road on Dec. 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the Bronx.
