Wappingers Falls, NY - Marist broke open a close game with 10 runs over the final three innings en route to posting a 12-2 win over Manhattan in the series finale between the teams at Dutchess Stadium.
The Red Foxes improve to 25-18 and 12-6 in the MAAC while the Jaspers fall to 22-25 and 10-8 in the league.
Marist opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning on Frankie Gregoire's two-run single through the left side.
Manhattan would quickly get one run back in the bottom of the first. Matt Forlow (GS, Cold Spring, NY / Haldane) roped a one-out single before juniors Fabian Pena (Miami, FL / Calusa Prep) and Richie Barrella (Larchmont, NY / Canterbury Prep) drew back-to-back walks to load up the bases. Freshman Matt Padre (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Prep) followed with a sacrifice fly to bring around Forlow.
The Jaspers would fight back to tie the game up at 2-2 in the third as Forlow again was at the center of the rally. After a leadoff single, Forlow advanced to second on a wild pitch before crossing the plate on a Pena RBI single up the middle.
After yielding two runs on three hits in the first inning, junior RHP Joe DiNizio (Middlesex, NJ / Middlesex) settled down and faced just one over the minimum in his next five innings of work, including retiring 13 in a row at one point.
In the seventh inning, the Red Foxes parlayed three Manhattan errors into three runs in grabbing a 5-2 lead before adding seven more over the final two frames.
Forlow was 2-for-4 with two runs while Pena went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a walk to highlight a six-hit Jasper effort.
DiNizio was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on just three hits with two strikeouts over 6.0 solid innings.
Randy Taveras went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and a RBI to lead the way for the visitors. RHP Conor McNamara struck out three while surrendering two runs on six hits with three strikeouts to earn the win as LHP Mike Coss collected his second save of the weekend with 3.0 perfect innings of relief.
Manhattan will next host Canisius on Saturday, May 13 at 12:00 pm.
