Rider Tops Manhattan 6-1 In Series Opener

Lawrenceville, NJ - Rider posted a 6-1 win over Manhattan in the series opener between the teams at Sonny Pittaro Field.

The Broncs improve to 17-20-1 and 9-7 in the MAAC while the Jaspers fall to 11-28 and 5-8 in the league. 

Rider opened the scoring on Tyler Kaiser's second-inning solo home run.

Manhattan appeared poised to tie the game up in the top of the fifth but senior Jose Carrera (Miami, FL / St. Brendan) was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the frame.

The Broncs added to their advantage with a two-run triple off the bat of Riley Mihalik in the bottom of the inning in opening up a 3-0 lead.

One inning later, Rider plated three more runs in jumping in front 6-0.

The Jaspers would get one run back in the eighth when senior Matt Forlow (Cold Spring, NY / Haldane) plated classmate Evan Brown (Asburnham, MA / Bridgton Academy (ME)) with a RBI ground out.

Sophomore Fabian Pena (Miami, FL / Calusa Prep) went 3-for-4 in notching his team-leading eighth three-hit performance of the year. Junior Brendan Bisset (New City, NY / Don Bosco Prep) added a pair of singles to highlight 10-hit attack.

Senior RHP Matt Simonetti (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) was saddled with the loss, yielding three runs on four hits with two strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Freshman T.J. Stuart (Milford, CT / Joseph A. Foran) was solid in relief, firing 2.0 scoreless frames.

Kaiser went 3-for-4 with two runs while Riley Mihalik went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI to lead the way for the Broncs.

Nick Margevicius earned the win, striking out eight while scattering six hits over 6.2 innings of action.

The teams will conclude their series tomorrow with a 12:00 pm doubleheader.
