JSN Postgame With Lawler/Modena
Riverdale, NY - Junior Erica Modena (Massapequa, NY / Massapequa) scored two goals to fuel Manhattan's (5-3) dominating 4-0 win over Canisius (2-6-2) in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener for both teams.
Modena, who now has a league-leading seven goals on the year, deposited her first score into the left corner of the goal in the 22nd minute after a Golden Griffin defender turned the ball over.
After halftime, Modena was right back at it depositing a Victoria Reis (Fr., Rockville Centre, NY / South Side) pass into the lower right corner in the 50th minute.
The Jaspers, who outshot the visitors by a commanding 23-3 count, added two more scores from freshmen Nicole Copping (Blue Point, NY / Bayport-Blue Point) and Emma Saul (Orchard Park, NY / Orchard Park) to provide the final 4-0 ledger.
Manhattan also held a commanding 4-0 advantage in corner kicks in avenging last year's 3-0 playoff-eliminating loss at Canisius.
Senior Kristen Skonieczny (Lagrangeville, NY / Arlington) made one save in goal while registering her third shutout of the year to improve to 4-2-1.
Also standing out for the Jaspers were senior Colleen Kavanagh (Rockville Centre, NY / Sacred Heart Academy) and junior Lizzy Carlson (Auburn, MA / Auburn) as each student-athlete now has a team-best two on the season.
Manhattan, which had a season-high 22 student-athletes see action, returns to action on Saturday, September 26 against Siena with first kick slated for 1:00 pm.
