Wappingers Falls, N.Y. - Manhattan hit .407 while scoring 18 runs on 22 hits in taking both games of a doubleheader against NYIT by scores of 6-3 and 12-5 at Dutchess Stadium.
The Jaspers also hit .407 (11-for-27) with runners in scoring position, compared to just .200 (4-for-20) for the Bears, in moving to 11-26 on the year while the visitors fall to 9-19.
Additionally, Manhattan scored a combined eight runs in the first inning over the two games after having scored just eight first-inning runs over the first 35 games.
Game 1
The Jaspers plated the first four runs of the game and never looked back in posting a 6-3 win.
Manhattan got the ball rolling quickly in the bottom of the first with four runs while batting around and sending 10 batters to the plate. Senior Chris Kalousdian (Fort Salonga, N.Y. / Kings Park) opened the scoring with a bloop single to plate freshman Brendan Bisset (New City, N.Y. / Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)) before classmate Joe McClennan (Highland Mills, N.Y. / Cornwall Central) followed with a two-run single to left field. Fellow senior Vin Teixeira (Hamden, Conn. / Hamden Hall Country Day) capped the scoring with a run-scoring double.
The Jaspers added to the lead one inning later when Teixeira plated sophomore Matt Forlow (Cold Spring, N.Y. / Haldane) with a RBI single while extending the lead out to 5-0.
NYIT then got on the board in the top of the third with a pair of runs, trimming the deficit to 5-2.
Manhattan would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Evan Brown (Asburnham, Mass. / Bridgton Academy (Maine)) delivered a RBI single, chasing home Jason Patnick (Hopewell, N.J. / IMG Academy (Fla.)).
The Bears would trim the cut the lead to 6-3 with a run in the top of the seventh but get no closer.
McClennan and Teixeira each went 2-for-4 with two RBI to pace a 10-hit offensive attack. Kalousdian and freshman Adam Genners (Jacksonville, Fla. / Stanton College Prep) each also notched two hits while Forlow scored two runs.
Sophomore RHP Shawn Kanwisher (Washington Township, N.J. / St. Joseph's Regional) improved to 2-0 on the year, yielding two runs on three hits over 3.0 innings. Freshman LHP Steve Arntsen (Manorville, N.Y. / Eastport S. Manor) followed with 3.0 scoreless innings of two-hit ball before senior RHP Sean Abbate (Levittown, N.Y. / Division Ave.) closed out the win with an inning of work.
Joe Daru had two hits while Louis Mele recorded two RBI to lead the way for NYIT.
RHP J.P. Lipovac (0-4) was saddled with the loss, allowed five runs on seven hits over 1.1 innings.
Game 2
Manhattan followed up its impressive performance in the opener with another solid offensive output, rapping out a season-high 12 runs, on 12 hits, as all nine regulars reached base safely.
After Daru gave NYIT an early 1-0 lead with a first-inning steal of home on a failed pick-off attempt, the Jaspers plated four first-inning runs.
Kalousdian opened the scoring with a with a RBI ground out to score Bisset before junior Christian Santisteban (Miami, Fla. / Gulliver Prep) blasted a solo home run to right field. McClennan and Patnick followed with infield singles before Teixeira blasted a two-run double in opening up a 4-1 lead for Manhattan.
For the second-straight game, the Jaspers also added to the lead in their second trip to the plate. Kalousdian chased home senior Mikey Miranda (Miami, Fla. / Florida Christian) with a RBI single before Santisteban delivered a two-run single in opening up what would prove to be an insurmountable 7-1 advantage.
After a quiet third inning, the Bears got back in the game with four unearned runs in the top of the fourth while trimming the deficit to 7-5.
Manhattan got one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame as Forlow walked before scoring on a McClennan RBI double.
The Jaspers added four more runs over their final two innings of work in capping the 12-5 win while securing the doubleheader sweep.
Santisteban, who delivered a sixth-inning, run-scoring double, finished up 3-for-3 with four RBI while falling a triple short of the cycle. Teixeira drove in three while Kalousdian and McClennan added two hits to round out the top performers for Manhattan.
Senior LHP Michael Martin (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Chaminade) earned the win, striking out two while yielding five runs, one earned, on seven hits over 4.0 innings. Junior Chris Liquori (Wyckoff, N.J. / Ramapo) capped the doubleheader sweep with 3.0 shutout innings in notching his first save of the year.
Daru went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI to lead the way for the visitors.
RHP Michael Sinnott (0-2) took the loss, allowing 12 runs, nine earned, on 12 hits with four strikeouts in a complete game 6.0-inning effort.
