Riverdale, NY - Luke Petrasek sank a three pointer with less than seven seconds to play to lift Columbia to a 72-71 win over Manhattan in non-conference play at Draddy Gymnasium.
Sophomore Zane Waterman (Winston-Salem, NC / Fayetteville Academy) scored a career-high 22 points while junior Rich Williams (Brooklyn, NY / Vermont Academy (VT)) notched his first career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
In a game that featured four ties and 12 lead changes, the Jaspers fall to 1-6 while the Lions improve to 6-5.
In the opening stanza, Manhattan shot a blistering 52.5 percent (10-of-19) from the floor in jumping out to a 32-26 lead at intermission. Waterman led the charge, scoring 16 points, on 5-of-7 shooting, highlighted by three triples.
After halftime, the Jaspers lead quickly grew to a game-high nine at 35-26 on a RaShawn Stores (Sr., Bronx, NY / Robinson School (NJ)) triple.
Columbia would continue to battle and scored seven-straight points, capped by a Maodo Lo three-point lay that gave the visitors a 53-50 lead with 8:22 to play.
Senior Shane Richards (New York, NY / York Prep) immediately hit a pair from the line before Stores hit a jumper to quickly reclaim the lead at 54-53 while setting up a frantic final seven-plus minutes.
Columbia responded with five-straight points and led 61-57 on a Lo triple with 4:57 to play before Richards canned four-straight from the line to tie it up.
With the score tied at 63-63 with 2:22 to play in the second half following a Petrasek dunk, Williams immediately hit a three pointer off a pass from junior Tyler Wilson (New York ,NY / Cardinal Hayes). The Manhattan lead would grow to four on a pair of occasions, the last of which came on a pair of Williams free throws that made it 70-66 with 30 seconds to play.
Alex Rosenburg then converted a three-point play and Wilson split a pair at the line to give the Jaspers a 71-69 lead with 17 seconds before Petrasek canned what would prove to be the game-winner. Williams would get one last chance to reclaim the lead but his up-and-under layup wouldn't drop as the Lions escaped with the one-point victory.
Petrasek scored a game-high 26 points to lead a Columbia squad, that shot 45.3 percent (24-for-53) from the floor.
Manhattan converted on 42.6 percent (20-for-47) from the floor, including 34.6 percent (9-for-26), while winning the battle of the boards (38-32).
The Jaspers return to action at Memphis on Saturday, December 12 with opening tip slated for 8:00 pm.
