RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? The Manhattan College women's soccer team came up short in its home opener falling 1-0 to Stony Brook this evening at Gaelic Park. The Lady Jaspers missed a few close scoring attempts, and the Seawolves capitalized on senior midfielder Trine Allenberg's goal in the 20^th minute to escape with the victory. With the decision, Manhattan (1-1) and Stony Brook (2-2) each move to .500 on the season.

“It was by far the best we have played this season, including our preseason contests. We played exceptional in the second half,” stated Manhattan head coach Sean Driscoll. “It was an evenly matched game. They played better in the first half and we were better in the second.”

The teams battled evenly through the opening minutes of the match, before Allenberg broke the scoreless tie with 19:40 on the clock. She accepted a feed from freshman Colleen McKenna on the right side and wiggled a shot past Manhattan goalkeeper Caitlin Trupiano.

The Lady Jaspers came out of intermission energized. Just 29 seconds into the half, sophomore midfielder Kristin Spiros slightly missed a fast break scoring opportunity when she placed a shot just outside the right pipe. Then in the 50^th minute, senior forward Christine Reina was blocked by the Seawolves goalkeeper on the ensuing break.

Stony Brook's Marisa Viola preserved the win making seven saves over 90 minutes of action between the pipes. Trupiano was solid in net for the Lady Jaspers with six saves on the evening, including two diving stops. She also worked all 90 minutes in goal.

Manhattan returns to action on Sunday for its contest with BIG EAST member Providence. Game time is schedule for 1 p.m. in Providence, R.I.
