Easton, Pa. (March 5, 2008) - The Manhattan College women's lacrosse team withstood a late scoring run by Lafayette's College to win their third game of the young season 17-13 at Lafayette's Rappolt Field on Wednesday evening.
Senior Alicia Psillos lead the Lady Jaspers' offensive effort, tallying four goals on the evening, while freshman Tara Convery and Jillian McGowan had three goals each. Keri Morrison, Helen Kerrisk and Phelicia VanOverbeke each had two goals on the night. Psillos had two assists and Morrison had one.
It didn't take long for Manhattan to get on the scoreboard, as Convery and VanOverbeke each scored unassisted goals within the first six minutes. After Lafayette scored a goal at 23:16 of the first half, the Lady Jaspers went on a four goal run to go up 6-1 at 11:55. After two Lafayette goals made it 6-2 at 9:38 in the first half, the two teams traded goals to make it 7-4 at 7:07 of the first half.
Three goals just before and after the halftime whistle made it 10-4 Manhattan. Lafayette then scored at 27:11 of the second half, before Manhattan scored three unanswered goals to open its lead to 13-5 at 23:51. The two sides then traded goals again before another Manhattan three goal run took the score to 17-7. Then the Lady Js held off the late six goal onslaught to take the win.
The Lady Jaspers' next game will be Wednesday, March 19th at Gaelic Park at 7 p.m. vs. St. Francis University of Pennsylvania.
