Lady Jaspers Triumphant at Canisius - Manhattan University Athletics

RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? The Manhattan women's soccer team rallied to a 2-1 victory in a heated league match against Canisius (9-3-3, 4-2-0 MAAC) this afternoon in Buffalo. Senior Christine Reina posted her third goal of the season, and fellow forward Caroline Morse delivered the game winner in the 51^st minute.

“I was proud of our effort today,” said head coach Sean Driscoll. “This was a nice win for us, it keeps us in contention for the MAAC playoffs. I am pleased how well we rebounded from Friday's match with Niagara.”

Manhattan (6-6-2, 3-1-1 MAAC) got its first goal of the contest coming off the foot of Reina in the 34th minute. Senior co-captain Brittany Duhamel (Milford, Conn./Foran) assisted the goal, marking her first of the year and seventh point this season.

The Lady Jaspers defensive unit, anchored by starters Duhamel, Jill Beauchamp, Devon Lutz and Kara Bucci, held Canisius scoreless over the first 45 minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Bachowski contributed to the effort with three saves, and led Manhattan into halftime with a 1-0 edge.

Bachowski recorded five saves during the contest.

Morse lifted the Lady Jaspers early in the second half with her second goal of the season. Reina assisted the goal which gave Manhattan a 2-0 cushion.

“We did a nice job of creating scoring opportunities toward the end of the first half and early in the second,” stated Driscoll.

Canisius eventually got on the scoreboard in the 75^th minute when Sylvia Kowalski utilized a feed from Rebecca Shupe and connected on her eighth goal of the year.

The Lady Jaspers defense shutdown Canisius during the final 15 minutes, not allowing another shot to preserve the one goal decision.

“Canisius is a good team, they are well organized,” said Driscoll. “This is always a difficult road trip, so I am happy we were able to earn points here in Buffalo.”

Manhattan returns action this weekend for its final homestand of the regular-season. The Lady Jaspers host Marist on Friday evening at 7 p.m. Manhattan will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday morning prior to its contest with Siena.
