Worcester, Mass. (September 1, 2007)? Failing to take advantage of scoring chances early in the contest, the Manhattan College men's soccer fell behind on a Holy Cross counter attack in the 14th minute and couldn't mount a comeback in a 4-0 loss to the Crusaders in the opening game of the regular season.

In the contest's second minute, Jasper striker Fernando Londono shot high over the crossbar off a feed from Adolfo Rivera as the Jaspers possessed the ball during the game's first dozen minutes.  During this period, Manhattan was able to garner two corner kicks, but failed to convert on each one.  Then, at 13:46 Holy Cross grabbed an errant pass in the midfield and sent Marsalis Beckford off on a breakaway that he converted to make the score 1-0.

Ten minutes later, Holy Cross countered possession again, gaining a corner kick that Crusader Kyle Miller headed just inside the far post off the assist from Jon Werth.

The Jaspers started off strong again in the second half, keeping possession again, but finding themselves countered one more time.  This time, Holy Cross' Andreas Andrews headed in a Miller cross to make it a 3-0 score at 64:08.

Pushing up to try to find some luck scoring, the Jaspers came close a few times, but were called offsides once and missed over the goal twice.  Then, again a Holy Cross counter at 78:48 resulted in an Alexander Schweitzer goal off an assist from Chidie Okpoebo.

“We did a pretty good job today of possessing the ball in the middle third of the field, but Holy Cross did a good job when the won the ball of going forward and putting us pressure in our back third.  And we needed to do a better job of getting into our box to get more shots off,” said Manhattan Coach Michael Swanwick.

The Jaspers, now 0-1, travel to West Long Branch, NJ on Friday, September 7 to take on Northeast Conference title holder Monmouth.  Kickoff is 4 p.m.
