BASEBALL TAKES RUBBER MATCH FROM DELAWARE STATE, 8-3

Dover, DE (February 29, 2004)- Manhattan took the rubber match of its three game series at Delaware State today, dropping the Hornets, 8-3. The Jaspers improved to 2-1 on the season as they connected on three home runs and banged out 14 hits in winning their second straight after falling in the season opener.

Manhattan took a 1-0 lead over Delaware State (6-4) in the top of the second when John Fitzpatrick led off the inning with a solo homer to left center. The Jaspers added solo runs in the third, fourth, and fifth on a Chris Gaskin RBI single, Fitzpatrick's second round tripper of the day, and a fielders choice, respectively, to make the score 4-2 after five innings.

In the sixth, Manhattan added two more, and added single runs in the seventh and eighth on the way to the win.

Kyle Wirtz picked up the win in relief of Ken Gleason, who pitched four innings, allowing just one run. Wirtz logged 3.1 innings of work, allowing two runs, but striking out three. Steve Bronder worked the last 1.2 innings, allowing no runs and no hits.

Jonathan Holzer and Frank Cappello each tallied three hit days, while Josh Greco, Gaskin, and Fitzpatrick each connected on two hits.
